Ordained as a deacon on September 15, 1984

Ordained as a priest on June 1, 1985

Ordained as a bishop on November 6, 1999

Archbishop of Utrecht since January 26, 2008

  • Created and proclaimed Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI on February 18, 2012, with the Title of San Calisto (St. Callistus)
  • Referent for medical-ethical questions on behalf of the Dutch Bishops’ Conference (since 1999)
  • Referent for the sector of vocations and studies for ecclesiastical offices on behalf of the Dutch Bishops’ Conference (since 2001)
  • Member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Bioethics of the Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum in Rome (since 2001)
  • Ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy for Life (appointed 2004) and member of the directive board of the Pontifical Academy for Life (2005-2010). On January 1, 2017, after the modification of the Academy’s statutes, appointed as ordinary member of this Academy for a period of five years
  • Member of the Congregation of the Clergy (2008-2017)
  • Member of the Pontifical Council for Culture (2008-2012)
  • Member of the Congregation for Catholic Education (since 2012)
  • Member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity (2014-2017)
